Ruth Hogan Poulsen Dressage with training facilities in Plainfield, Vermont and Loxahatchee, Florida.

Team Poulsen

Many dedicated equestrians make up Team Poulsen. There are year-round team members at each farm, while some team members travel between farms.

“The respect for each horse’s need for their own routine is paramount. The staff is critical in creating positive energy and figuring out how to make each horse happy. All of my staff, working students and interns are people who are really invested in horses.” ~ Ruth

Ruth Hogan-Poulsen

“Ruth models the quality of self-accountability. People respond to the experience of that expectation in an almost unconscious way. When everybody’s taking care of their own emotional and physical needs, then people aren’t bumping up against each other so much. It allows people the freedom to be kinder and more generous with each other and to be extremely supportive. Ruth sets that tone.” - Candace Platz, DVM. (Longtime Client)

Bo Poulsen

Originally from Denmark, Bo comes from a  family  of horse people. He began a career as a blacksmith in the 1990s and met Ruth in Wellington in 1990. Bo then returned to Denmark to graduate University with a degree in  Mechanical Engineering but "he couldn’t stay away. . ."  ~ Ruth. The two were married in 1994. Bo has shod horses for  many international events including the Pan American Games in Rio,  and worked on horses for  many of the past WEG and Olympic teams. Bo now acts as Bespoke and East Hill's primary farrier. In his spare time, Bo enjoys fishing and working on his and Ruth's new Loxahatchee home.

East Hill Farm

Con and Jeannette Hogan

Jeannette and Con are Ruth's ever-supportive parents. They are the co-founders of East Hill Farm and live right next door in Ruth's childhood home.

Con Hogan has been an advocate for health and welfare for decades.  He is a current member of the board of trustees at the the Vermont College of Fine Arts and a director of the permanent fund for Vermont's kids. Although never  a rider himself,  Con has watched and encouraged thousands of kids and adults to learn the valuable lessons of horsemanship through the programs at East Hill Farm.

Jeannette is a registered Physical Therapist and runs a hippotherapy program out of East Hill.  She was a co-leader of the Trailblazers 4-H club for over 35 years. While she is  considered semi-retired,  she maintains an important  presence at the East Hill barn every day.

Kathie and Bill Moulton

Kathie gave Ruth her first pony ride at the age of 5 and the rest is history.  Kathie is a USDF certified  instructor through Second Level. When Kathie is not teaching, she can be found showing her two Schnauzers.

Emilie Goddard

Sarah Cleland

Sarah has been the East Hill Farm barn manager and  head trainer since 2011. She grew up riding at East Hill and, after years away, she returned to the farm looking to rekindle her passion. Sarah has an innate ability to understand the mental psyche necessary to ride confidently. Students love Sarah's calm but energetic approach.  She also does all the teaching for the Norwich University's Equestrian club program, hosted at East Hill Farm.

Emilie joined  Team Poulsen first as a working student for a season down in Florida  with her Haflinger gelding, Abercrombie, and her adorable Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Avery. She diligently documented her experience as a Team Poulsen working student on her blog, "A Blonde, A Brunette and a Red Head."  Today, Emilie is a full-time staff member at East Hill Farm and  helping relaunch East Hill's children's program. Julie and Caliente debuting at PSG this summer!

Julie McKean has been a terrific asset to Team Poulsen! As the assistant trainer and barn manager she has developed a fantastic report  with the horses, working students and clients.

A USDF Bronze, Silver, and Gold medalist, from Camden, Maine, Julie competed successfully through the FEI Pony, JR, and Young Rider divisions, qualifying for the NAJYRC at each level and winning four medals - including a gold medal for her freestyle created by Ruth. She competed in the Brentina Cup and Open Grand Prix on her mare, Stelina, with scores up to 72%.

Since joining the team, Julie has continued her showring success with several client horses, including Deborah Alfond’s Lusitano, Caliente,(competing at Intermediare 1 and 2) and Elizabeth Johnson’s Larks Home Run (Homer) a Quarter Horse gelding who competed with another Ruth-designed freestyle in 2018 with scores in the 70’s.

Stelina, who is still owned by Julie and a much-loved member of the team, has been a vital part of teaching the next generation of riders, helping 13 year-old Eden Smith earn her Bronze Medal during the 2018 show season.
