Many dedicated equestrians make up Team Poulsen. There are year-round team members at each farm, while some team members travel between farms.
“The respect for each horse’s need for their own routine is paramount. The staff is critical in creating positive energy and figuring out how to make each horse happy. All of my staff, working students and interns are people who are really invested in horses.” ~ Ruth

Assistant Trainer / Barn Manager
Julie McKean has been a terrific asset to Team Poulsen! In just a few busy months she has become an important and loved member of the team. As the new assistant trainer and barn manager she has developed a fantastic report with the horses, working students and clients. Julie is a USDF Bronze, Silver, and Gold medalist from Camden, Maine. She competed successfully through the FEI Pony, JR, and Young Rider divisions, qualifying for the NAJYRC at each level and winning four medals, including a gold medal for her freestyle created by Ruth. She competed in the Brentina Cup and Open Grand Prix on her mare, Stelina, with scores up to 72 percent.
This summer Julie debuted her Poulsen Dressage showing career with an up and coming FEI horse Caliente, owned by Deborah Alfond, winning her 3rd PSG. She also introduced Nancy Rosen's horse Doca at fourth level.
Congratulations to Julie on her new partner Shalimar! Shalimar is a 2012 Sir Donnerhall mare, recently imported from Germany and owned by Jane McKean. This precocious young mare has exceptional gaits and an intellectual prowess beyond her years. Shalimar will make her debut in the show ring down in Wellington, Florida this winter, and will surly be one to watch for in the future, destined to become a very special FEI horse.
Bespoke Property Manager
Chanett and her loyal, wire haired Jack Russell Terrier "Mousti" act as Bespoke Farm's property managers year round. Chanett runs her own training program and maintains a number of seasonal and year-round clients in the Wellington area.
Current Working Students
Team Poulsen regularly welcomes working students in both Florida and Vermont. Students will increase their knowledge of bio mechanics, nutrition, barn management, and young horses, as well as advance in their own personal riding goals.
Olivia Henriques grew up riding her grandmother’s horses in Andover, New Hampshire, but she was adamant about not allowing young Olivia to take riding lessons until she was 8.
“I wanted to but she said I had to wait until I was 8 and actually knew how to use my own body,” Olivia said. “I’m really glad I waited.”
She started riding hunt seat and then switched to dressage five years ago.
“It was something a little bit more interesting to me to get me thinking,” she said. “I’m so glad I did because you never stop thinking in dressage.”
She started working for Team Poulsen in March and rides whatever horses Ruth puts her on for her lessons. During the upcoming winter season in Florida, she is leasing Michelle Hirshberg’s horse Bo, and plans to compete with him in hopes of earning her Bronze Medal.
Her favorite part about working for Team Pouslen is the people she works with.
“We laugh a lot,” she said. “We talk about the horses’ personalities a lot and what they would be like if they were humans. It really entertains us.”
Several times a week, they go to Ruth’s for dinner.
“It’s more like a family,” she said of her co-workers and the people who board their horses at East Hill Farm and Bespoke Farm. “I work with some amazing people and we have a real community that loves us and cares about us. It’s really not like any barn I’ve ever worked in.
“I love the clients,” she continued. “They are so awesome. Everyone appreciates how hard we work and it really means a lot. We have incredible horses and incredible people.”
