Caliente. RIP. You were one of the most complex, athletic and hardest trying horses I’ve ever known. Everything you learned was easy for you physically you only needed to have mental space and happiness to do it. As the trainer of Caliente, I worked with him for over 11 years. From a coming five-year-old with no real confidence or connection or understanding of how to use his body he went from being awkward youngster to an unbelievable Grand Prix horse over the span of our relationship. His owner Deborah is one of the most amazing owners I’ve ever had with a horse in my barn for this long of a duration. Her natural ability to go with a horse and be balanced and elastic was unusual to say the least. Callie had a lot of fire he was aptly named Caliente. He was full of talent and life and power, and it just needed always to be directed into a positive space. As the rider of Caliente for the last number of years, he was an unbelievable asset to my riding and training. Complex to ride mentally and sometimes physically, keeping him in front of your seat was what he taught me. He always had a spectacular feel and would give you those moments of joy many times during a ride where it all was just clicking away. He kept me sharp to keep my mind open and to be patient and to always listen to him. He was complicated physically to ride sometimes too, but of all the horses at his athletic ability and capability, he was also very easy on my body. For me he was a blessing to ride every day although sometimes frustrating with his spooking at the ground or unknown things, he was actually telling you don’t trap me on the left, I need to be able to move more, please let my shoulders come up please let the left rein in hand be better, please give me the space to do what I need to do. If you listened, he made you a better rider. Always happy and easy in the barn and completely laid-back, known to take naps during the day and at horse shows as well, Callie brought much education to all that worked with him and especially anyone who rode him. I’m so thankful to have had Caliente in my life as well as his fantastic mom Deborah. She always allowed me to go at my own pace, (actually his pace) for the next step. Sometimes I would say he’s not ready to go to the show. Sometimes I would call and say he’s ready to go tomorrow. Sometimes we wouldn’t go anywhere for months just working on confidence and connection. Deborah always allowed me to do what I felt was the next stage or step for Caliente. He was a fabulous Grand Prix horse. A fabulous horse in general. One that you would love to have in your barn over and over and over again. Horses. Many up there looking over me. Ruth Hogan Poulsen
side note: I am so thankful that I had Susan Stickle do a photo shoot at the farm just this week. Thank goodness. ... See MoreSee Less
I am so sorry for this loss for all of you. You always listen to your equine partners, Ruth, and meet them where they are in the moment.
It makes for a beautiful partnership based on love and trust. More should ride with that kind of heart and understanding...gentle patience.
What a lovely tribute. I am sorry for you and Deborah. Rest in peace, Callie.
Ruth, so, so sorry! You two were truly a special partnership!
I feel honored to have watched/judged you two in the GP. The bond you had was evident every stride, allowing all present to witness harmony between horse & rider.
I will pray for God’s comfort for you and all that loved this special horse😘
this is such sad, sad news. My heart breaks for you, Deborah, Emilie and all those who loved and cared for this magnificent boy. Mornings at the barn won’t be the same without seeing the two of you perform magic. Cali was so fortunate to have people in his life so invested in his well being and so dedicated to demystifying and loving this extraordinary horse. He was the stuff of dreams and will remain embedded in our heart always. ❤️ ❤️
Ruth, my second thought...after feeling absolutely shattered and heartbroken for you on hearing about Calli....was "thank goodness Sue had literally just done a photo shoot". His pirouettes were something to aspire to and who knew corners could be ridden so deep whilst maintaining perfect balance. My mornings will be simply "less" without my students sharing the arena with him. He was unique and special in every way.
A lovely insightful tribute to a special partner. And such glorious photos and memories! So very sorry
It was inspiring to have watched you two in the Grand Prix ring. God bless to all who loved him 🙏🏻♥️
